Teaching Your Puppy How To Sit

Sit is not only one of the easier commands to teach your new puppy, but it’s also useful by helping you control your dog, keeping him safe, and making him a better-behaved family member.  Puppy Sit is an important part of your puppy’s training.

In this article, we’ll tell you how to get started on teaching your puppy how to sit. We’ll also discuss what equipment you may need for this lesson as well as provide some tips for helping your pup be successful at learning new skills!

Learning Basic Commands Like Sit is Essential

Sit is one of the most basic dog commands. In fact, it’s so important that you should start training your puppy to sit as soon as possible.

Sit is used for many things: stopping your puppy from jumping on people, running away, chasing other animals and people (including strangers), playing too rough with other pets in the house, etc.

Dogs also need this command so they can focus on their owners whenever they’re doing something fun, like going for walks or playing games together. This gives both you and your pet an opportunity to bond with each other while also helping them learn some new skills at the same time!

How to Teach Sit to Your Puppy

Sit is a command, not a trick. It’s important to remember this when you’re teaching your puppy how to sit. Here’s how you can teach your puppy to sit:

  • Stand next to your dog with a treat in your hand.
  • Keep the treat in your hand and arc it over their head. Your dog will raise their head to follow the treat causing their bottom to touch the floor.
  • Once their bottom hits the floor, instantly praise them.

Reinforcing Sit with Your Puppy

Once your puppy is sitting well, practice “sit” in different positions. Sit in front of your puppy and then to the side so that he has to turn his head to look at you. Then try sitting on different surfaces like grass, carpet, and wood to make sure they really understand the concept and will sit in various situations later in life.

Teaching Your Puppy to Sit Encourages a Bond with You

Teaching your puppy how to sit is an easy way to build communication with your dog. Teaching your puppy to sit using food rewards is one of the best ways to get them accustomed to sitting quickly.

It’s also a good place to start when you’re teaching your puppy new tricks and other obedience tasks, so it’s important that you take your time with this one! Remember to never physically put your puppy in the sitting position; this can be upsetting to some dog breeds and personalities, which would further discourage them while training.
